Description
The Old Limekilns, located 450 metres south-east of Redstead, are a pair of limekilns dating from the early and later 19th century. They are constructed from squared whinstone and limestone rubble, featuring cut sandstone dressings, with brick eyes and lining in the square kiln pot. The main kiln is circular, with an added square kiln to the south-east, both served by the same charging ramp. The circular kiln has three semicircular drawing arches with raking buttresses in between; the central arch has an inserted lower segmental head made of rock-faced and margined voussoirs. The square kiln features segmental drawing arches and set-back raking buttresses at the corners, with all arches having small segmental-headed eyes. Both kilns have circular pots. The site is marked as Christonbank Lime Works on the 1865 Ordnance Survey map and is noted for being impressive and well preserved.
