Description
The dovecote, located approximately 100 yards southeast of Surrey House, dates from the late 18th century and was originally designed as a gazebo. It is constructed of ashlar and features a hexagonal, two-storey design. The southeast side has a boarded door, while the ground floor includes three windows that are now blocked. On the first floor, there is one large square window opening on the south side, with quatrefoils on the other sides, two of which are blank. The building has a cyma-moulded cornice, but the roof has largely collapsed.
Inside, the ground floor contains nesting boxes built into the former window openings and features a stone rib vault with broad flat ribs and pointed cells between. There are also traces of painted decoration. It is likely that the structure was initially built as a gazebo before being converted into a dovecote.
