Description

Surrey House is a house from the mid-18th century, possibly with an earlier core. It features an ashlar facade and dressed stone elsewhere, topped with a pantiled roof. The building is two storeys high, with a main block that has three bays, a lean-to on the west side, a projecting west wing, and irregular additions to the rear.

The central entrance consists of a six-panelled door with a high four-paned overlight. There are twelve-pane sash windows throughout. The roof is steeply pitched with gabled ends that have reverse-stepped gables and rebuilt end stacks.

The west wing, which projects on the right, was originally two storeys and three bays but is now roofless and in a derelict state. It features a central two-leaf har-hung door. The left side of the building shows older masonry, particularly in the lower courses.

The rear facade is irregular and picturesque, featuring a two-storey lean-to on the left and three other lean-tos of varying heights, all with pantiled roofs.

Inside, there is a staircase with stick balusters, turned newels, and a ramped handrail. The large six-panelled doors are set in broad architraves. Two rooms have distinctive Ionic modillion cornices and dado rails.

Surrey House is said to be on the site of, and partly incorporates masonry from, the house where the Earl of Surrey stayed before the Battle of Flodden. At one time, it served as a coaching inn known as the George and Dragon.
