Description
The Johnson memorial, located 20 metres southwest of the Church of St. James, is a graveyard memorial erected in 1809. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar, cast iron, and bronze, featuring a square plan. The memorial has a stepped plinth with panelled sides, a moulded frieze and cornice, and a stepped cap topped with a fluted urn on a cast-iron base. The overall height of the memorial is 3 metres.
On the lower east panel, it reads: "THE VICAR, CHURCHWARDENS AND VESTRY OF SHILBOTTLE ERECT THIS MONUMENT ON THE REMAINS OF WILLIAM JOHNSON OF NEWTON." The upper panel displays a bronze plate with a letter dated May 5, 1809, from Lieutenant J. Orr of the 7th Regiment Fuziliers, addressed to Sergeant-major Johnson's parents. The letter expresses condolences for the loss of their son, who died bravely in battle at Martinique on March 2, and highlights his respected character and the legacy he left behind.
