Description

Colliery Farmhouse is a house built around 1800, with a later 19th-century outshut. It is constructed of squared stone, except for the rubble outshut, and features cut dressings. The roof is made of Welsh slate and has been rebuilt with brick stacks. The building has a near-square plan and originally had a front door on the left side that leads into a stair hall, from which all rooms are accessible. It is two storeys high with three bays and a symmetrical design, including a plinth and a central blind doorway. The house has 12-pane sash windows, with the lower ones being renewed, and slightly projecting sills. The roof is tall and steeply pitched, with stepped end stacks. The right side of the house features a pent outshut with three small-paned windows and a boarded door. The left side has a renewed door leading into an added sun lounge, a 12-pane sash window, and an arched stair window that holds a renewed 15-pane sash with an intersecting head. The rear elevation mirrors the front, except for one small inserted window on the ground floor right.

Inside, there are six-panel doors and an open-well stair with stick balusters, moulded newels, and a moulded ramped handrail.

Colliery Farmhouse is part of a small but distinctive group of farmhouses on the Duke of Northumberland's estate, with other examples located at Alndyke, Greensfield Moor, and Rennington North Farm. The 20th-century sun lounge is not of special interest.
