Description
This is a free-standing cross located 25 metres north-west of the south gate to the churchyard in Longhoughton Village. It is made of cut sandstone and dates from perhaps the Pre-Conquest or early medieval period. The cross features a rectangular slab that narrows at the top, leading to a cross with rounded armpits and a tapered 'hammerhead' top, standing at an overall height of 1.05 metres. It is likely a sepulchral monument rather than a traditional churchyard cross. A similar cross, which is now lost, was discovered in Gateshead in 1908.
