Description

Garden walls north and north-east of Callaly Castle date to 1770 and 1775, with later extensions from the late 19th century. The walls are constructed of dressed stone, with brick linings in the older sections, and later sections built of random rubble with ashlar facing.

The older wall follows an L-shape and is attached to a wall and bridge at its south end, which connects to the northwest corner of Callaly Castle. This section is approximately 6 feet high for the first 40 yards and includes a doorway dated 1775. The wall then ramps up to a higher section, remaining high as it returns to the right. A doorway with a Gibbs surround and a triple keystone, dated RMC 1770, is situated at the return. The wall is finished with flat coping.

Later walls enclose a kitchen garden to the north. They also follow an L-shape and feature rusticated gate piers with domed caps, and tall rusticated corniced piers with ball finials at the northeast and northwest corners.
