Description

The dam on the River Coquet, located 350 metres upstream of Guyzance Bridge, was built in 1775 by the engineer John Smeaton for John Archbold of Acton and Edward Cook of Brainshaugh. It was repaired and a cement skirt was added in 1926. The dam is constructed of squared stone and features a horseshoe shape with a fall of 2.4 metres and a radius of curvature of 51.8 metres. It has a vertical front face and a battered rear. There is an adjacent riverside retaining wall on the south side, which includes a boarded sluice leading to the millrace just upstream of the dam.
