Description

Guyzance Mill is an early 19th-century mill, with a date of 183? scratched on the kiln. It is constructed from coursed rubble with cut and tooled quoins and dressings. The building has a rectangular shape with lower pent-roofed sections on the east (wheel house), north (drying kiln), and west sides.

The south elevation features a main block that is three storeys high and has two bays. The ground floor includes a boarded window and a doorway with a timber lintel, while the first floor has two 24-pane Yorkshire sash windows, and the second floor has two windows with lost carpentry. All windows are set in chamfered alternating-block surrounds with slightly projecting sills. The gables are coped, and there is a small stepped-and-banded stack at the left end. The wheel house on the right has a tall opening with a corbelled lintel. The left return shows a first-floor 24-pane Yorkshire sash window. The rear elevation features a stable door under a boarded double pitching door, both in chamfered surrounds, located to the right of the kiln, along with two second-floor windows that have lost carpentry.

Inside, there is an undershot iron-and-timber waterwheel, which was probably once external, similar to those at Brinkburn Mill and Thrum Mill in Rothbury. The stones, gearing, and some machinery remain in situ.

At the time of the survey, the mill was derelict and in poor condition, with the west pent outshut being roofless.
