Description

The Monument to Grace Darling, located about 35 meters west of the Church of St Aidan, was constructed in 1844 based on designs by Anthony Salvin, featuring a life-size effigy by Charles Raymond Smith. It underwent restorations in 1885 by F R Wilson and in 1894 by Hick & Charlwood.

This canopied tomb is designed in the Decorated Gothic style and is made of ashlar and bronze, with cast-iron railings and a Portland stone effigy. The rectangular base supports a carved, recumbent effigy of Grace Darling, depicted holding a stone oar beside her. The figure rests on a mattress adorned with carved seaweed forms. The canopy is supported by eight bronze spiral colonettes with open leafy capitals, from which triple trefoiled pointed arches with ornate leafy spandrels extend. The monument features bronze cresting with quatrefoils and is enclosed by cast-iron railings topped with spear-head finials.

Inscribed in incised Roman letters on the east face of the base is W[...] Sc[...] 1838; on the west face is C.R.SMITH; the north face bears the Gothic inscription: Died - 20 October 1842-aged 26 years; and the south face has G[…] D[…] Born 24th Novr 1815. Additionally, raised Roman letters on a bronze plaque on the south face read: GRACE HORSLEY DARLING / BORN – NOV. 24TH 1815 / DIED – OCT 1841 / AGED 26 YEARS.
