Description

The Church of St Mary is a Roman Catholic church built in 1830, designed in a Gothic style, and is attributed, though unconvincingly, to John Green. It is set back from the street with its west gable end facing the road. The church is constructed of ashlar stone and features three windows on the west side, separated by applied octagonal shafts. The shallow crenellated gable is topped with the Vatican arms, and the windows have decorative tracery.

There is a lower projecting porch that also has a crenellated gable, with angle buttresses and a central pointed doorway adorned with a crocketted ogee label. The main gable includes blind merlons. The nave consists of three bays made of rubble, with dividing buttresses. The east gable is crenellated and has a two-stage octagonal belfry above a polygonal shallow chancel, with a high east window located above the vestries.

Inside, the church retains its original furnishings, including an encrusted frieze with medallions featuring Catholic symbols and a segmental wooden ceiling with ribs. There is a gallery at the west end supported by three Tudor arches. The east end displays blind plaster tracery on the walls, with crocketted arches and pinnacles, and the altar features five gables with icing sugar tracery.
