Description
Mackenzie and Robb Graves, located about 50 yards south-west of the Church of St. Aidan, consist of two gravestones made of sandstone. The first gravestone commemorates the Rev. John Morell Mackenzie, who died in the wreck of the steamship Pegasus on July 20, 1843. It is designed as a broken pillar on a high base and features an inscription that highlights his role as a professor of Biblical criticism and church history at the Glasgow Theological Academy. The inscription, placed by his widow, describes him as a man of exceptional talent and learning, with a kind disposition and deep piety. It recounts how he gathered passengers to pray as they faced drowning. The second gravestone is a tablet with a shaped top dedicated to Rev. John Robb, who died in the wreck of the Forfarshire in 1838.
