Description

The farm buildings located approximately 30 metres northwest of Lorbottle Farmhouse date from the mid-19th century and are designed as a planned farmstead. They are constructed from snecked stone with ashlar dressings and feature Welsh slate roofs. The gables are coped with ashlar and have kneelers, and the corners are accentuated with quoins. The buildings are arranged around three sides of a long, narrow yard and include both two-storey and single-storey structures.

The north range contains a granary and cartsheds. The right section features a single segmental arch with sliding double doors and three half-slatted windows above. The central section has eight segmental arches that step down the hill, with the left arch also having sliding double doors and eight half-slatted windows above. The left section includes a single segmental arch with a half-slatted window above it. To the west, there is a single gabled cartshed with a large segmental arch and recessed sliding double doors.

The southwest area features a large hay barn that has an open west side supported by three tall iron columns, with widely spaced slates for ventilation. Behind this barn, facing into the yard, is a low cartshed. The south range includes a covered crewyard with six gables facing into the yard, most of which have flat-headed openings, while one has a segmental opening. The barn and stable range to the east has a very long catslide roof, a single chimney stack, and a series of four plank doors on the north side. This complex is an important and well-preserved example of a mid-19th century planned farmstead.
