Description
West Lodge and Gateway to Ford Castle is a lodge and gateway built in 1866, likely designed by David Bryce for the Marchioness of Waterford. The structure is made of ashlar stone and features a Welsh slate roof, showcasing a Gothic style.
The lodge is a single-storey building with three short radiating wings and a porch located in the angle between two of these wings. The porch includes a pointed-arched door and sidelights beneath a hoodmould. The gable displays the date and the monogram of Lady Waterford. The front of the lodge has three bays; the left bay projects at an angle and features a six-light canted bay window on the gable end, while the right side has two three-light mullioned and transomed windows. The roof is gabled with ridged and roll-moulded coping, kneelers, and a ridge stack with four clustered shafts. The roof also incorporates bands of purple and blue slate.
To the left of the lodge is a screen wall and gatepiers. The gatepiers are castellated and octagonal, flanked by arcades of twenty pointed arches. The rearing horses on the piers were added by Lord Joicey after 1907.
