Description
The Church of St Michael and All Angels is a parish church located in Ford Village. It dates back to the 13th century and underwent extensive restoration in 1853 by architect John Dobson. The building is constructed of squared stone, featuring a nave with a Welsh slate roof and a chancel with a clay tile roof. The church includes a nave with aisles, a south porch, a chancel, and a north vestry, along with a west bellcote.
The nave consists of three bays, with a porch on the left side. Each bay contains a pair of lancet windows, adorned with drip moulds that have head stops, a detail added during the 1853 restoration. The south-west and south-east angle buttresses are medieval, with the eastern buttress featuring two trefoiled niches. The north aisle was added in 1853.
The west projection rises to a prominent two-tier bellcote, which has paired lancet bell openings on the first tier and a single lancet above, topped with a stone pyramidal roof. There is an original lancet window to the north of the projection.
The five-bay chancel has 19th-century lancet windows with head stops and a three-light Geometric east window.
Inside, the early 13th-century two-bay south arcade features round piers and bases, octagonal capitals, and pointed double-chamfered arches, with the west pier displaying dogtooth detailing. The octagonal responds include a west respond with a 13th-century head stop. The north arcade and chancel arch were also designed by Dobson. A west lancet has a shouldered rere-arch, and there is a trefoiled piscina in the south-east corner of the nave. Six medieval grave slabs or parts of slabs are set into the floor at the west end of the nave. An elaborate Decorated stone reredos from 1892, created by W.S. Hicks, is present, along with a war memorial from around 1920 made of coloured marble featuring a ceramic picture of St. George.
