Description

The Grange and West Grange, formerly known as Prudhoe Grange, is a house that has been subdivided into two residences. It dates back to the 13th century, with later medieval alterations. An outshut was added in the 18th century, and there were further additions and extensive remodelling in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The building is rendered and features a Welsh slate roof. It has two storeys, with one wide bay on the left and three narrow bays on the right. The walls are four feet thick.

On the left side, there is a 13th-century doorway that has two orders of columns with crocket capitals and a multi-moulded arch with nailhead detailing. Above the arch, there is a medieval stone crowned head. To the right, there is a 20th-century door and flanking canted bays, along with 19th-century sash windows on the first floor. A short stretch of nailhead frieze is visible at the top right. The gabled roof has raised flat coping and external ashlar corniced end stacks.

Inside, the bathroom reveals exposed medieval external masonry, including a blocked window and a wooden lintel. In the bedroom, there is further masonry featuring a 16th-century fireplace with a roll-moulded surround and a relieving arch above.

Historically, the house served as a chantry chapel from the 13th century. The 13th-century doorway is positioned correctly for the south door of a church, suggesting it is likely in its original location.
