Description
Matfen High House, formerly known as High House, is a house dating from around 1840, although it has an earlier core. It is built of random rubble with ashlar dressings and features a Welsh slate roof, designed in the Tudor style. The house has two storeys and three bays. The entrance is a Tudor-arched door with a moulded surround, located in a gabled porch that has kneelers. The windows are two-light, double-chamfered, set in raised surrounds, with 12-pane sashes in each light. There are angle pilaster strips and stone brackets that support the eaves. The gabled roof is adorned with kneelers and ridged coping, and there are end stacks featuring four corniced conjoined octagonal shafts. Additionally, a re-used lintel on the rear door is dated 1723.
