Description

Townfoot Farmhouse, along with its attached farm buildings and cottages, dates from the early 19th century, although it has an older core. The farmhouse is constructed of dressed stone and features a graduated Lakeland slate roof, while the other buildings are made of random rubble with Welsh slate roofs. The farmhouse is located on the right side, with the farm buildings arranged around a yard to the left.

The house is two storeys tall and has three bays. It features a plank door and two late 19th-century sash windows that are irregularly spaced on the ground floor. There are three similar sash windows above. The gabled roof has flat coping and is topped with two stone end stacks and one ridge stack.

To the left of the farmhouse, there are two single-storey stores. The first store has a plank door, a 20th-century window, and cart doors with a wooden lintel. The second store features a segmental arch and a half-slatted window. The wall between these stores is 4 feet 6 inches thick and includes a door with drawbar holes, along with one jamb that is a Roman altar inscribed with a hunting scene, which was originally the door of the bastle house.

At the head of the yard, there is a two-storey byre with a granary above. Each floor has a central door and flanking half-slatted windows, along with an external stone stair at the rear. The left side of the yard contains two cottages designed with a lobby-entry plan, featuring a blank wall facing the yard. The rear of each cottage has a central door and flanking sash windows, topped with gabled roofs that have small stone gable stacks. In the center of the farmyard, there is an old rubble midden surrounded by a raised walkway.
