Description
This building, located 10 meters west of the house adjoining the west end of Mellom Cottage, is an outbuilding that was once a pair of bastle houses, reduced in height. It dates from the 16th century or early 17th century. The structure is made of large rubble with galleting and features massive quoins. The western part has an asbestos roof, while the eastern part has a corrugated iron roof. The eastern bastle has been built onto the gable end of the western bastle.
The front elevation includes a blocked door with massive jambs and a lintel, a 19th-century sash window, a slit window, a straight joint, remains of a blocked door to a former first floor, and another blocked door with exceptionally massive jambs and lintel. The rear elevation has been partly rebuilt and features later doors.
Inside, there is a set-back for the former first floor and traces of a fireplace against the east gable of the eastern bastle. This building is an example of 'terraced' bastles, which likely once comprised the entire area of Chesterwood.
