Description
The French Sailors' Memorial, located 10 metres north of the gate to the churchyard of St. Michael, is a graveyard monument erected in 1913. It is made of red terracotta and features a recumbent Celtic wheel-headed cross adorned with foliage carving. At the foot of the cross, there is a tablet inscribed with the names JEAN GUILBERT, LOUIS JOSEPH DUGUENOY, FRANCOIS NOUVEL, PIERRE ARCHENOUX, and EMILE DUVAL GOURNAY. The memorial is framed with a moulded rectangular border that bears the inscription: "THIS CROSS IS PLACED HERE BY THE PEOPLE OF HOWICK, BOULMER AND CRASTER IN MEMORY OF FIVE FRENCH SAILORS WHO OUT OF A CREW OF 30 WERE DROWNED IN THE WRECK OF THE FRENCH STEAM TRAWLER TADORNE OFF THE ROCKS AT HOWICK BOAT HOUSE ON MARCH 29TH 1913."
