Description

Shaf toe Terrace consists of a row of almshouses built around 1805 for the Commissioners of Greenwich Hospital. The buildings are constructed from squared stone with tooled dressings and feature slate roofs along with stone and brick stacks. At the center is a two-storey Warden's house, flanked by single-storey almshouses, with a two-storey teacher's house at each end of the row.

The front elevation of the Warden's house has three bays and is symmetrical, with the central bay slightly set forward. It features an open pedimented gable, a round-headed central door, and altered sash windows, all with raised surrounds. The almshouses have doorways and windows with raised stone surrounds, some with flush-panelled doors, although many windows have been altered. There is a central round-arched passage through each range. The East House on the far right has an open pedimented gable and a first-floor band, with 12-pane sash windows in raised surrounds on both the ground and first floors. The West House on the far left also has an open pedimented gable, with renewed ground and first-floor windows in raised surrounds.

On the rear elevation, the Warden's house features a round-headed stair window with radial glazing and various sash windows. The left return wall has a six-panel door with an oblong fanlight. The almshouses on either side have 20th-century windows.
