Description
The monument to the 1st Lord Armstrong, located at the south-west of the detached graveyard, was erected in 1900. It is made of cut stone and features a paved rectangle enclosed by a dwarf wall with moulded coping. At the west end, there is a two-stepped base leading to the plinth of a Celtic cross, which is adorned with plant scrolls and a central rose boss at the top. The plinth bears inscriptions commemorating William George, 1st Lord Armstrong of Cragside, who died in 1900, stating, "HIS SCIENTIFIC ATTAINMENTS GAINED HIM A WORLD WIDE CELEBRITY, AND HIS GREAT PHILANTHROPY THE GRATITUDE OF THE POOR." It also commemorates Margaret Lady Armstrong, who died in 1893, and includes text from Ecclesiastes along with the Armstrong family arms.
