Description
This drinking fountain, located 30 metres east of the Post Office in Mitford, was built in 1877. It is made of tooled-and-margined stone and features a brass spout. The fountain has a round-headed arch that encloses a relief carving of a dragon's head impaled on a sword. The spout plate is inscribed with "J.P.O.M." (which stands for Colonel John Philip Osbaldeston-Mitford) and includes the date of construction. The fountain is historically significant as it is situated at the site of a holy well, which is reputed to have been the location of miracles associated with a relic of St. Cuthbert's shroud in the year 1006.
