Description
A manor house, likely dating from the 16th century, was remodelled in the 17th century, with the addition of a porch tower dated 1637, and further alterations to the kitchen wing in 1961-2. The construction is primarily large rubble with cut dressings, and the kitchen wing has a pantile roof. The main block features a central porch tower on the east side and twin wings with a small outshut between them on the west side.
The three-storey porch tower has a plinth and a round arch with imposts and keystone to the doorway, topped by an ornate entablature featuring a worn armorial panel, strapwork, and finials. String courses step over three-light transomed windows, and the tower is finished with an embattled parapet. The returns show ground-floor openings with reused 14th-century trefoiled heads, and two-light transomed windows above. Within the porch, the doorway has a flat-pointed head, a chamfered surround, and a six-panel door.
Much of the front and end walls of the main block have collapsed, leaving fragments adjacent to the porch tower. The rear wall shows remnants of several doorways and fireplaces, one with a flat-pointed arch within a square frame, under a relieving arch. The south wall of the south-west wing retains two-light windows with traces of diamond-latticed glazing. The north-west, or kitchen wing, has undergone significant alteration and is not particularly noteworthy. A fireplace and dogwheel were removed to Mitford Hall.
