Description
This group of four medieval grave slabs, likely from the 13th century, is located 7 metres south of the vestry of the Church of St. Michael. They are made of sandstone and are arranged from north to south as follows:
i) The first slab features chamfered edges and has an incised pair of shears. ii) The second slab is a worn semi-coped design. iii) The third slab is plain with roll mouldings at the angles of a broad marginal chamfer and is broken in two. iv) The fourth slab is similar to the third but remains unbroken.
These slabs may be in their original position, making this group unique in the county. The second, third, and fourth slabs resemble others found in the Cathedral Yard at Durham.
