Description
The Ulgham War Memorial is located in the churchyard of the Church of St John the Baptist, which is also a Grade II listed building, and is near several other Grade II listed monuments. The memorial is designed as a Celtic cross made of granite. The front face of the cross-head features five hemispherical bosses. The cross shaft rises from a tapering pedestal that is set on a two-stepped base.
The inscription begins at the foot of the cross shaft and continues on the staggered top of the pedestal to its front face. It reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THE PARISH OF ULGHAM WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918" followed by 18 names. Below this, on the riser of the upper step, the inscription continues: "THE MEN WERE VERY GOOD UNTO US, AND WE WERE NOT HURT, THEY WERE A WALL UNTO US BOTH BY NIGHT AND DAY" followed by a name.
