Description
Manor House is a building with earlier fabric remodelled in the 17th century, extended circa 1800, and altered in 1983. It is constructed of rubble with stone dressings, with rendered returns and rear, and has a slate roof. The building is in a T-plan, with 19th-century and later additions. It is two storeys high, with a three-bay front and a two-bay rear elevation. A renewed door sits in the third bay; a previous doorway was located in the second bay. Mostly small-pane casements are found in the older openings. The gables are coped, with moulded kneelers, and there are stone end and ridge stacks.
The interior of the southern three-bay section has walls 0.9 metres thick. A fireplace is positioned at the north end, featuring a heavy oak hood bressumer previously spanning the full width of the building, and there are roughly-chamfered transverse beams. The six-bay upper-cruck roof has trusses with cambered collars, two levels of purlins, and a ridge. A rear wing contains a closed-string dog-leg staircase dating to circa 1680, with turned balusters, a moulded handrail, and panelled newels. A plain kitchen fireplace from circa 1800 is located at the north end of the main block. Prior to recent alterations, the earlier three-bay section of the main block had a central cross passage. Rubble and clay ground floor walls were formerly visible, built on heavy timber sills. The discovery of remains of early windows with splayed jambs, not visible externally, occurred in the southern part of the main block.
