Description

Hartington Hall is a house dating from the early 17th century, likely with a 16th century core. The openings were renewed in the 18th century, and the roof and rear wing were altered in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of random rubble and features a Welsh slate roof. It has an L-plan layout with an 18th century outshut in the re-entrant angle.

The house stands three storeys high and has three bays. The central door consists of six flush panels set in a slightly-chamfered surround. The windows are renewed six-pane sashes, with 18th century lintels and sills, while the jambs are older. The gabled roof has overlapping coping, kneelers, and rock-faced corniced end stacks. Quoins and remnants of the wall from the older house can be seen on the left return.

Inside, the walls are approximately 40 inches thick. On the ground floor, there are two large 17th century fireplaces featuring outer chamfers, cyma-moulded surrounds with broach stops, and Tudor-arched lintels. There is also a doorway with a broad chamfered Tudor-arched surround and oak beams. The first floor also has oak beams, while the second floor features a 17th century fireplace with a flat lintel supported by large rounded corbels.

The building was referred to as a bastle in 1542.
