Description

The water tank building and two water columns at Haltwhistle Railway Station are disused structures dating from 1861. They were designed by Peter Tate and constructed by R. Wylie and Co. for the North Eastern Railway Company. The building features an iron water tank set on a stone base, with the front and right sides made of red ashlar sandstone and the rear and left sides of dressed sandstone.

The water tank building is a single-storey structure with three round arches supported by square piers. These arches have chamfered arch bands and are filled with radial glazing and weather-boarded infill. Above the arcade, there are two stepped bands. The tank itself is made of iron plates bolted together, with seven plates on the front and five on the returns. Each plate has cross-braced ribs, and the central plates on all sides display oval panels featuring the engineer's and maker's names, the date, and a crowning sea-horse motif. The right return mirrors this design with two bays, while the rear and left returns are plain.

The two water columns are located on platforms to the west of the tank building. Each column is topped with a ball finial and features a counter-weighted swinging arm with a leather hose. These columns are a rare survival from the mid-19th century.
