Description
The Clock Tower, built in 1864 for Lord Armstrong, is located 110 metres north-east of Cragside Park House. It is constructed from squared tooled stone with raised tooled dressings and features a clock stage. The lower part has a Welsh slate roof, while the upper section includes a timber cupola topped with a lead spire.
On the south elevation, there is a vertical-panelled door set within a chamfered pointed arch. The other elevations have lead-latticed casements in similar openings, all beneath gables adorned with cruciform loops. The octagonal clock stage displays four clock faces, and the cupola is supported by shouldered arches that lead to the swept spire, which is topped with a weathervane.
Inside, there are two transverse round arches that support the superstructure. The clock mechanism, which indicates the day of the week among other functions, is housed in an early cast-iron frame. The bell, dated 1864, was made by John Warner and Son in London (though it was not seen during the inspection).
Originally, the clock tower served as the pay office for the Cragside Estate, and it is believed that Lord Armstrong may have designed the clock mechanism.
