Description
Cresswell Tower is a tower house, likely dating from the 14th century, with an embattled parapet added in the early 18th century. It is constructed of squared stone with dressings and has a rectangular plan across three storeys. The north side features segmental pointed doorways on the ground and first floors, with the upper doorway being the original entrance, which has traces of a machicolated projection above. Most windows are rectangular chamfered loops, except for a vesica-shaped window on the east side of the ground floor and a larger 17th-century window, which formerly had a mullion and transom, on the first floor south. At the time of the survey, all openings on the lower floors were blocked. The tower has corbelled-out turrets at the eastern angles and smaller corbelled projections at the parapet level on the south and west sides.
Inside, the ground floor features a barrel vault, and there is a newel stair located at the north-east corner. The interior also includes contemporary fireplaces, mural recesses, and a garderobe.
This medieval tower is associated with the Cresswell family, and there was an adjacent mansion house to the north built in the early 18th century, which was demolished in the 19th century.
