Description

The Scremerston War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was unveiled in 1920 and includes a tablet for the Second World War. This memorial, made of Aberdeen granite, stands about 5 meters tall at the roadside, approximately 140 meters south of the Grade II-listed Church of St Peter. The memorial features a wheel-head cross that is elaborately decorated with carved interlace patterns and a hemispherical boss at its center. The names of those from Scremerston who fell in the First World War are inscribed on the lower half of the cross shaft, which rises from a tapering plinth that sits on a low step.

The main dedicatory inscription on the front face of the plinth reads: "TO THE REVERED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF SCREMERSTON, WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR. 1914 – 1918. A LAST TRIBUTE OF PRIDE AND SORROW. 'THEY DIED AS MEN WERE CALLED UPON TO DIE FIGHTING FOR GOD AND RIGHT AND LIBERTY. AND SUCH A DEATH IS IMMORTALITY.'"

At the base of the cross, there is a later tablet that is inclined and reads: "IN GRATEFUL & HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF SCREMERSTON WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945. (NAMES) 'THEY DIED THAT WE MIGHT LIVE.'"

It is noted that the timber fence and iron railings surrounding the war memorial, as well as the concrete paving slabs within the enclosure, are not considered to have special architectural or historic interest.
