Description
This is a pair of houses located on the north side of Main Street in Corbridge. The east house dates to the late 16th and early 17th centuries, with alterations and an addition in the 18th century. The west house was built in the mid-17th century and altered in the mid-20th century. Both houses are constructed of rubble with roughly-shaped quoins and cut dressings, and have Welsh slate roofs.
The east house is three storeys high and has three bays, with an irregular facade. A doorway, now glazed, is positioned slightly right of centre, featuring a moulded surround with a flat-pointed head within a square frame and heavy, irregular dressings. Late 19th-century canted bay windows flank the doorway, with four-pane sashes in stop-chamfered surrounds and moulded cornices. The upper floors have four-pane sash windows in raised stone surrounds. The east house has coped gables with stepped end stacks. A late 19th-century half-timbered porch with decorative leaded glazing is positioned to the right.
The west house is two storeys high with an attic, and has one bay. A projecting ground floor of the 20th century is not of historical interest. It features a three-light and two-light chamfered mullioned window with hoodmoulds to the first floor. The attic has a dormer with a similar three-light window and a coped gable with ornamental finials. A stepped stack is positioned at the left end.
A parallel block runs behind the east house, and a wing extends from the west house, both dating to the 19th century and altered; they are not of particular interest. Originally known as Eastfield, the property was the residence of the Walker family.
