Description

Middle Ord is a house built in 1788 for J. Grey, with a rear wing added in 1910 for Cuthbert Grey. The building features ashlar stonework and a Welsh slate roof, with renewed brick chimneys. It stands two storeys high, plus attics, and has three bays. The central feature is a large early 19th-century glazed porch, which contains an early 19th-century half-glazed door and fanlight with a scalloped radial head, all set within a fine open-pedimented surround supported by attached fluted Doric columns and adorned with paterae in the friezes. To the right, there is a mid-19th-century canted bay window with 16- and 8-pane sash windows, while a late 19th-century bay window is located to the left. On the first floor, three 12-pane sash windows are present, and the building has a moulded eaves cornice, a gabled roof with flat coping, and end stacks.

Inside, the staircase features stick balusters and turned newels, with the principal newel being boldly twisted and having an acanthus base and necking, supporting a lampholder. In the drawing room, there are two cupboards flanking the fireplace, each with half-glazed, round-headed doors that have scalloped radiating glazing bars. Additionally, there is an elliptical-arched niche, six-panel doors, and panelled shutters. The restrained late 18th-century wood fireplaces retain their original grates.
