Description
Akeld Bastle is a late medieval building that has been repurposed as an animal shelter. The upper storey was likely rebuilt in the late 16th or 17th century. It features random rubble walls that are 5 feet thick, with dressed stone quoins, and a Welsh slate roof. The structure is two storeys tall, measuring approximately 62 by 25 feet.
The original doorway is located to the right of the long west wall and has a chamfered surround with drawbar holes, along with a relieving arch above it. There is a later door to the left of this entrance. The first floor has three small shuttered windows, and the building has a gabled roof with flat raised coping.
On the right side, there is a double outside stone stair leading to a boarded door on the first floor. The left side features four slit windows on the ground floor, with a dovecote above that includes five stone alighting ledges and twelve holes in stone screens.
Inside, the bastle boasts an impressive high round tunnel vault. Attached to the right side of the building is a field wall that stretches approximately 100 yards south. This wall is very robust, over 5 feet high, has a noticeable batter, and may partly represent the former barmkin.
