Description

The garden wall to the east of Hauxley Hall, along with an attached summerhouse, dates from the late 18th century, while the summerhouse itself is likely from the early 20th century and incorporates older materials. The wall is constructed of brick in an irregular, mostly stretcher bond pattern, featuring stone coping and a roughly-coursed stone rear face. It stands 3.5 meters high and runs north from the north-east corner of Hauxley Hall, with a gap for a 20th-century drive, before turning east alongside the road. Some of the flat stone coping has been replaced with cement in places and is swept up at the east end. There is a short southward return that is 5 meters high and has three external setbacks.

The half-glazed summerhouse includes an open porch supported by banded piers, which carry a separate swept hipped roof.

Historically, this section of the wall likely served as the back of a 'long glass house' built by John Widdrington, intended to allow his delicate wife from the south to exercise without being exposed to the east wind. A 20th-century greenhouse built against the wall and an altered section of the wall further to the east are not of special interest.
