Description
The gate piers and attached forecourt walls at Shotley Hall were likely built in 1856. The piers feature chamfered plinths and angles, topped with moulded pyramidal caps that hold earlier statues; on the left is Perseus with the Gorgon's head, and on the right is a figure dressed in 18th-century attire. These statues were relocated from the gatehouse at Greenhead, which was demolished in 1964. To the left, a stepped wall with chamfered coping connects to the Gate Lodge and extends beyond, returning to a lower front wall that has double-chamfered coping. A smaller forecourt on the right is similarly enclosed, with the front walls curving at the entrance to the drive.
