Description

Shotley Bridge is a bridge built in the late 18th century and widened around 1820. It is constructed of squared stone, with the lower parts of the jambs and the north-east approach wall made of rock-faced stone. The bridge features an elliptical arch. The earlier south face displays recessed voussoirs and a band below the parapet, while the abutments are splayed more broadly than the approach walls. The north face of the arch has flush voussoirs and an arch ring. The parapets have chamfered coping, and the north-west wing wall extends to a pier topped with a low pyramidal cap. Part of this bridge is located in the County of Northumberland.
