Description
Lipwood House is a house built in 1800 for Colonel Coats, who was formerly in the Indian Army, with later extensions added in the 19th century. The main facades are made of ashlar stone, while the rear is constructed from squared stone. It features a rusticated plinth, sill bands, and a moulded eaves cornice. The roof is hipped and covered with slate, and there are ashlar corniced stacks. The house has an 'L' plan, with a later 19th-century extension at the rear. It is two storeys tall and has an entrance front with five bays. The left bay on the ground floor is behind a link wall to a cottage. In the second bay from the right, there is a six-panel door with a patterned fanlight, set in a pilaster-and-archivolt surround and sheltered by a prostyle Tuscan porch. The windows are 12-pane sashes. The south front has four bays, with the central two forming a broad curved bow, featuring similar windows that are curved in the bow. The east front has five bays, with the three right bays being 19th-century additions that have reproduction windows. There are three stacks on the ridge. Inside, the house retains contemporary fittings, including plaster friezes and an elegant Regency staircase with cast-iron balusters, a moulded handrail, and a carved newel.
