Description

The Heslop gravestone, located in a walled garden 10 metres from the east wall, is a recumbent ledger slab dating from 1655. It is made of limestone and features an incised inscription that reads: "HIC IACET GEORGIVS HESLOPE QUONDAM DOMINVS DE HERMITAGE QVI OBIIT 15 IAN ANNO. DOM 1655." George Heslop was one of the earliest Baptists in the area, belonging to a congregation that first met in Hexham Priory in 1652.
