Description
The mausoleum, built in 1766, is located 500 metres east of Seaton Delaval Hall. It features a cruciform plan and is constructed of ashlar stone. The west elevation has two storeys and is divided into two, three, and two bays. It includes a plinth, sill bands, and a triglyph frieze. The central section is set forward and has steps leading up to a pedimented tetrastyle Roman Doric portico. The central doorway is framed by an open-pedimented Roman Doric surround with an arched fanlight above. Round-arched windows are set within a keyed archivolt. The raised crossing has a moulded cornice and an oak skeleton where a lead-covered dome once stood. The two-bay returns feature sunk moulded panels, while the rear elevation displays a central bow with a Venetian window above an arched opening leading to the vaults.
Inside, the crossing has round arches resting on moulded imposts, with lower semicircular openings above. There are arched niches in the end and rear walls. The vaults below follow the cruciform plan and are designed with groin vaulting and partitioned shelves for coffins.
Historically, the mausoleum has never been used, as Sir John Delaval could not reach an agreement with the Bishop of Durham regarding the fee for its consecration. At the time of the survey, the structure was derelict and roofless.
