Description
West Ditchburn Farmhouse is a house, largely built in the mid-18th century, possibly incorporating earlier elements. The second floor was removed around 1965. It is constructed of squared stone with tooled quoins and dressings, topped with a 20th-century concrete-tile roof and brick end stacks. The south elevation features two storeys and five bays, arranged symmetrically. It has a plinth and rusticated quoins. The central entrance consists of a half-glazed four-panel door set within an architrave that has a pulvinated frieze and cornice. The windows are four-pane sashes framed in raised stone surrounds. The rear elevation displays twelve-pane sash windows, including an arched stair window with old moulded glazing bars, a surround with a keystone and imposts, and to the left of the stair window, there is a plaque from the Newcastle Fire Company.
Inside, the farmhouse features fielded-panel doors and panelled shutters. The open-well staircase has turned balusters, moulded newels, a moulded ramped and wreathed handrail, and shaped tread ends. Arches with keyed and panelled archivolts lead to the lobbies at the top and bottom of the stair.
There are two datestones from 1769, bearing the initials and names Rich. & Eliz. Carr, located on the farm buildings to the northeast of the house, which likely relate to its construction or remodelling.
