Description
The dovecote-henhouse and attached shelter shed, built around 1830-1840, is located on the south side of the road in Hedgeley, East Bolton. It is constructed from squared stone with tooled-and-margined quoins and dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof. The square dovecote is accompanied by a contemporary shelter shed to the west.
On the south elevation, the dovecote features a henhole approximately 2 meters above the ground, with a recess above that contains five pigeon entrances and an alighting shelf. The shelter shed to the left has a pair of square-headed openings, and both structures have hip-ended roofs. The right side of the dovecote displays a doorway with a timber lintel and a small window.
Inside, the lower part of the dovecote contains stone wall boxes for hens, while the upper part has smaller boxes for pigeons. There is a ruinous pent privy at the rear of the dovecote, but it is not considered of special interest.
