Description

Numbers 1-3 The Carriage House is a stable range built around 1820 for the Mitford family by John Dobson. It features squared tooled stone with tooled-and-margined dressings and has a Welsh slate roof topped with a wood and lead cupola. The building forms three sides of a rectangular yard.

The north range consists of seven bays. The central section is two stories high and has three bays, with a plinth, a first-floor band, and a moulded eaves cornice. It includes segmental arches, with the central arch open and flanked by boarded double doors, and windows above. The gables are coped, and there is a stepped-and-corniced stack on the left end, while the right end stack is reduced. The central cupola on the ridge has a square base with a clock face and a drum with louvred openings between six pilasters, topped with a conical roof and weathervane.

The single-storey flanking sections have boarded doors and various sash windows. The single-storey east range features two pairs of boarded doors and a 16-pane sash window, with a hipped roof to the right. The single-storey west range also has various sash windows and a coped gable to the left with a stepped-and-corniced stack. All openings are framed in alternating-block surrounds, and the gable ends are pedimented.

On the external elevation of the north range, there are three 20-pane sashes on the first floor. To the left of the entrance, there is an attached single-storey kennel range with three boarded doors and a flat-coped wall leading to an exercise yard.
