Description

STAINTON AND THORNTON ROAD, NZ 41 SE (4814) THORNTON east side. 5/124 Burdon table tomb, 4m east of chancel of Church of St. Peter and St. Paul. G.V. II. Table tomb to 4 members of Burdon family, died between 1741 and 1821. Sandstone, on renewed concrete base. H-plan, formed by centre slab and convex transverse ends, giving appearance of chest tomb with deeply recessed sides. Approximately 211cm x 106cm x 106cm high, overall. Both faces of centre slab have oval panel with inscribed epitaph. Colonnetes, with bold entasis, at angles. Corniced table-top. Plain panelled returns, with moulded plinth and cornice.
