Description
The walls, gates, and gatepiers to the garden of No 15 are an early to mid-18th century structure located on the west side of Thornton Road in Stainton. The garden wall is made of red brick and features curved-topped stone copings at the south end of the east wall. It stands approximately 4.5 meters high and encloses two sides of the garden of a mid-20th century house. The east wall has off-centre gatepiers that are adorned with heavily-moulded stone cornices and shallow ogee-domed caps, along with mid-20th century two-leaf iron gates. There are also similar intermediate piers on the left and right sides, as well as a plain pier at the right end. The north wall steps up from east to west and includes plain intermediate piers. These structures are prominent in views along Thornton Road and originally enclosed the kitchen gardens of Thornton Hall, which was demolished around 1800. The house at No 15 is not considered of special interest.
