Description
This early 19th-century house is located on the north side of Hartlepool Friar Terrace, within the Headland area. It was formerly listed as No. 1 Moor Houses. The house is constructed of stucco and has a Welsh slate roof with rendered gable coping, a kneeler on the left side, and a rendered end stack on the right.
It is three storeys high with a basement and has three bays. A six-panelled door is positioned to the left, set beneath an overlight with geometric glazing bars. The door is framed by a timber doorcase featuring pilasters and an entablature with a deep cornice. Late 19th-century sash windows are present on the ground and first floors. The second floor has sash windows with glazing bars in the left and right bays, while the central window is blocked up and painted to resemble a sash with glazing bars. Rendered sills, chamfered quoins at the corners, and a bracketed timber eaves cornice supporting moulded cast iron guttering are present. The house was formerly the residence of General Seddon, Mayor of Hartlepool and a friend of the Duke of Wellington. A later extension to the left is not considered to be of historical interest.
