Description
The United Reformed Church, originally known as the Independent Chapel, was built in 1843. It features dressed limestone that is rendered, painted, and scored to resemble ashlar, with a Welsh slate roof. The building is two stories high with a basement and has a three-by-three bay layout, presenting a gabled front to Durham Street, where the basement is fully exposed.
The façade includes an applied Tuscan Order, a plain frieze, and a pediment that displays the date and the word "INDEPENDENT" on a panel in the tympanum. The mid-20th century fixed rectangular windows are set in their original openings and have raised surrounds with shallow gabled heads. The central doorway consists of double three-panelled doors and an overlight, all within a raised surround that features a moulded cornice supported by simple consoles. There are spear-headed cast iron railings surrounding the basement well. The right (north) return has matching windows, and at the west end, there is a rectangular-plan gabled apse.
