Description
Elwick Hall, located on Church Bank in Elwick Village, is a rectory that has been converted into a private house with four flats in the right wing. It was built in the mid to late 18th century, with wings added around 1790 on the left and around 1800 on the right. The building features roughcast on random limestone rubble and has a hipped roof covered with clay pantiles, which has sprocketed eaves.
The structure is two storeys high and consists of five bays, including slightly projecting end cross wings. The left wing projects as a half-octagon and contains three mid-19th century sash windows with glazing bars and painted sills. The right wing has a mid-19th century sash window with glazing bars on the first floor, while the ground floor is blank. Among the three middle bays, the left bay features late 20th century French windows. The right-hand bay has a late 20th century glazed door and a mid-19th century sash window with glazing bars on the first floor. Other windows in the building include early 19th century tripartite sashes with glazing bars and painted sills. The left return has four bays that have been re-sashed, while the right return has been altered in the mid to late 20th century.
