Description
Dene Beck Culvert is a culvert located beneath a railway embankment, designed by George Stephenson for the Stockton & Darlington Railway in 1825. It is constructed from coursed and ashlar sandstone.
The western portal of the culvert is designed similarly to a small accommodation bridge. It features a semi-circular arch that is approximately 2 meters high, made with ashlar voussoirs. The spandrels and the flanking terminal piers are constructed from coursed dressed stone. Above the arch, there is a horizontal ashlar stringcourse that marks the base of the parapet, which is also made of finely dressed ashlar stonework. One of the square terminal piers has a moulded cap. Short wing walls made of coursed stone with ashlar coping extend from the piers on either side of the arch.
In contrast, the eastern portal is more simply designed and does not have a parapet. The culvert tunnel itself is not straight; it bends slightly southwards at its eastern end.
